EN ISO 20471 is the current European standard for high-visibility clothing. It sets three classes by the minimum area of fluorescent background and retroreflective tape:

Because the class depends on area, a vest can reach a higher class in larger sizes than in small ones. Most vests only reach Class 1 or 2; Class 3 needs sleeves or a full jacket. EN 471 is the older standard that EN ISO 20471 replaced in 2013. If your tender asks for EN ISO 20471, request the current certificate.

Choosing a vest for Gulf heat and winter nights
In summer, a vest is one more layer over a coverall, so weight matters. The 60 GSM net BSVM 1900 and the 120 GSM mesh BSVM 1920 let air through, and the mesh back panels on the BSVF 1975 do the same. Wash vests regularly: dust and sweat dull reflective tape, and a dirty vest is less visible.

Class 1 needs 0.14 m2 of background and 0.10 m2 of tape, Class 2 needs 0.50 m2 and 0.13 m2, and Class 3 needs 0.80 m2 and 0.20 m2. Most sleeveless vests reach Class 1 or 2, while Class 3 normally needs a garment with sleeves.
Which safety vest is best for UAE summer heat?
A mesh or net vest in a light polyester, around 60 to 120 GSM, is the most comfortable for summer because air passes through it. Is EN 471 still valid for safety vests?

There is no single UAE-wide colour code for vests.
