Safety helmets and hard hats to EN 397 and ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 in HDPE and ABS, with pin-lock or 4-point ratchet adjustment, a vented model for hot sites and up to seven colours for site colour coding. Welding helmets also available, with bulk supply from Dubai.

Safety helmet supplier in UAE and Dubai

Head protection is required on almost every UAE construction and industrial site, and on large projects the helmet colour often shows the wearer's role. Border Safety Wears supplies Border-brand safety helmets and welding helmets from our showroom in Deira, Dubai, packed by the carton for site issue.

Helmets in our range

Helmet standards: EN 397 and ANSI/ISEA Z89.1

EN 397 is the European standard for industrial safety helmets. Every certified helmet passes shock absorption, penetration resistance and flame resistance tests, and any chin strap anchorage must release within a set force range so the strap cannot cause strangulation. Optional tests are marked inside the shell: -20ยฐC or -30ยฐC (very low temperature), +150ยฐC (very high temperature), 440 Vac (electrical insulation), LD (lateral deformation) and MM (molten metal splash).

ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 is the US standard, used on many Gulf projects run to American specifications. Type I helmets protect against blows to the top of the head and Type II against top and side impacts. Class G (general) is tested to 2,200 V, Class E (electrical) to 20,000 V, and Class C (conductive) has no electrical rating.

In our range, the BSH 1220 and BSH 1240 are listed to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 and EN 397:2000. The BSH 1230 is listed to CE EN 397:2012 + A1:2012 and to GB 2811-2019, the Chinese national safety helmet standard. The optional EN 397 markings and the ANSI type and class are shown on the label inside each helmet and on the datasheet, so check these when your site needs electrical insulation or side-impact protection.

Choosing a helmet for Gulf conditions

Sun and heat age helmet plastics faster than in cooler climates. Check shells regularly for chalky fading, cracks or brittleness, and never store helmets on a vehicle dashboard. A vented shell such as the BSH 1240 helps air move on hot outdoor shifts, but vented helmets should not be used where electrical insulation is needed. A ratchet is quicker to adjust when a worker wears a cap or sweatband under the helmet, while a pin-lock is simple and cheaper for large crews. Lighter helmets are easier on the neck over a full shift.

Colour coding varies by site, but white is often worn by engineers and supervisors, yellow by general workers, and green by safety officers. See our hard hat colour codes guide for the usual conventions, and our heat illness guide for summer site safety.

Safety Helmet: frequently asked questions

What do safety helmet colours mean on UAE construction sites?
There is no single UAE law that fixes helmet colours, so each main contractor or site sets its own code. A common pattern is white for engineers, managers and supervisors, yellow for general workers, green for safety officers and red for fire wardens or emergency staff. Always follow the colour code in your project's HSE plan.
What is the difference between EN 397 and ANSI Z89.1?
EN 397 is the European standard for industrial safety helmets and covers shock absorption, penetration and flame resistance, with optional markings for electrical insulation, low or high temperature, lateral deformation and molten metal. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 is the US standard and sorts helmets by Type (I for top impact, II for top and side) and Class (G, E or C for electrical protection). Many helmets sold in the Gulf carry both.
How long does a safety helmet last?
There is no fixed legal expiry, but most manufacturers mark the production date inside the shell and give a replacement period for the shell and a shorter one for the harness. In strong sun, plastics age faster, so UAE sites often replace helmets sooner. Replace a helmet straight away after any significant impact, or if the shell shows cracks, chalky fading or brittleness.
Is a ratchet or pin-lock safety helmet better?
A ratchet helmet adjusts with a knob at the back, so the wearer can tighten or loosen it with the helmet on, which suits long shifts and wearing a cap underneath. A pin-lock helmet is set by pushing pins into holes in the headband, which is simple and usually costs less for large crews. Both can meet EN 397, so choose on comfort and how often the fit needs changing.
Are HDPE or ABS helmets better for hot climates?
HDPE helmets are light and economical, while ABS shells are more rigid and generally hold up better under heat. Both plastics are affected by long exposure to strong sun, so storage out of direct sunlight and regular inspection matter more than the material alone. Check the shell date and the manufacturer's replacement guidance for either type.
Can a vented safety helmet be used for electrical work?
No. Ventilation slots let air in but also break the insulating shell, so vented helmets are not suitable where electrical insulation is required. For electrical work, choose an unvented helmet marked 440 Vac under EN 397 or Class E under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, and check the marking inside the helmet.
