N95, KN95, FFP2 and FFP3 explained
These are filter classes from different national standards, not brands. The number tells you the minimum share of airborne particles the filter material stops in the standard test.

Two things matter more than the number on the box. The first is fit: a mask only filters the air that passes through it, so it must seal on a clean-shaven face, and fit testing is the reliable way to check. The second is the hazard: these are particle filters. They do not remove gases or solvent vapours, and they do nothing in low-oxygen spaces. That work needs a respirator with the right cartridges or supplied air. Check the markings on the mask and the datasheet against the class named in your risk assessment before you order.
With valve or without
An exhalation valve lets warm, damp breath out easily, so the mask stays cooler and drier over a long shift. The valve does not filter the air you breathe out, so it is the wrong choice where the wearer must also protect others, such as food handling, clean rooms or clinics. Use the no-valve BFM 0301 there.
Dust masks for Gulf heat and sandstorms
Outdoor crews in the UAE work in fine sand, cement dust and summer heat above 45°C. Sweat breaks the seal and a damp mask gets harder to breathe through, so plan for at least one fresh mask per worker per shift, and more on dusty days. Store cartons sealed, in a cool room out of direct sun. In a sandstorm, pair the mask with sealed goggles. What is the difference between N95 and KN95 masks?
Both classes require the filter to stop at least 95% of airborne particles in testing. N95 is the US NIOSH class and KN95 is the Chinese GB 2626 class, and the test methods and approval routes differ. If your site specification names one of them, order to that class and check the markings on the mask.
Is an N95 mask the same as FFP2?
They are close but not the same. FFP2 is a European class under EN 149 with a minimum filtration of 94%, while N95 is a US class at 95%. Many safety teams treat them as similar for dust work, but if a contract or method statement names a standard, buy to that standard.
Should I choose a safety mask with a valve or without a valve?
A valve makes breathing out easier and keeps the mask cooler, which helps on long, hot shifts outdoors. The valve does not filter exhaled air, so choose a no-valve mask for food handling, clean rooms, clinics or anywhere the wearer must protect other people.
Do N95 masks protect against welding fumes or chemical vapours?
N95 and KN95 masks are particle filters. They reduce exposure to dust and fume particles but do not remove gases or vapours, such as solvent fumes or gases given off in some welding work. For those hazards, use a respirator with cartridges matched to the substance, as set out in your risk assessment.
Can I use an N95 mask during a sandstorm in the UAE?
Yes, a well-fitted N95 or KN95 mask filters the fine dust carried in a sandstorm, and it works best with sealed goggles to protect the eyes. Replace the mask once it is clogged, damp or harder to breathe through. Outdoor work should be reviewed or stopped in heavy sandstorms.
How often should a disposable safety mask be replaced?
Disposable masks are meant for one shift. Replace them sooner if they are damaged, dirty, wet or harder to breathe through, which happens faster in UAE summer heat and dusty conditions. Do not share masks between workers.
